Welcome to the home of Lawn Darts. A hugely popular backyard outdoor game, lawn darts were all the rage until the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission issued a ban on the product back in December of 1988. Not much later, Canada outlawed lawn darts in 1989.
The Game of Lawn Darts
The game of lawn darts consisted of four plastic shafted, three finned darts with heavy metal tips. The heavy metal tip of the lawn dart was its ultimate demise.
Lawn darts was a game where the large, over a foot in length dart was tossed and even thrown overhand at a circular target a considerable distance apart from each other. If a dart landed in the circle you got a point. Lawn Darts would be played to a set score. The first person or team to arrive at that number would be declared the winner. Unfortunately, the recipe for backyard fun also became a formula for disaster. There were actually fatalities reported to have occurred during lawn darts.
Cornhole – Lawn Darts of the 21st Century
Some people have noticed the similarity between Cornhole to the game of lawn darts. Cornhole uses cornhole bags which are thrown at a hole similar to the distance that lawn darts were tossed. Cornhole bags are thrown at a cornhole board containing a hole which is the target. Cornhole bags are cloth bags filled with corn. They only weigh about a pound and are not rigid. Therefore, they have no means of penetrating a human skull, making them the perfect substitute for a friend game of lawn darts.
